Brief Bio.

Laura Koplewitz was raised in Northern Vermont, immersed in the sounds of nature. She studied interdisciplinary humanities (B.A.),  (M.A.),, (Ph D.).  She was fortunate to receive creative mentoring from composer-performers Terry Jenoure, Alex Shapiro, Tania Leon and Joan Tower. A tonal composer, her musical influences include Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Debussy and a long list of other composers through time.

Teaching

Prof. Laura Koplewitz, Ph.D  teaches undergraduate, Masters, & Ph.D. students.  She teaches Masters core & Capstone Liberal Studies classes; and is a Dissertation Committee Chair. Laura designs interdisciplinary courses in art, music, literature and STEAM / STEM. Themes have included math & the arts; time in language & music; the creative mind in the digital era; cross-disciplinary tools for designing the future. She enjoys innovating as an educator. 

B.M.I. Composer

Musical works include chamber & orchestral settings:  a violin concerto written for soloist  Joanna Kurkowicz, recorded with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra; music for the Parker String Quartet, premiered at Harvard University; an orchestral commission for the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, from Maestro Jaime Laredo; chamber music for the Vermont Contemporary Music Ensemble (VCME), and orchestral music for the Green Mountain Youth Symphony (GMYS). Collaborations have included visual artist Grimanesa Amoros; poets Shana Deets, and Ryan Vine; a poet-composer commission (the Sanctuary Project), premiered at Carnegie Hall (Zankel). She has received a Vermont State Arts Council Creation Grant. Artists colony residencies have included the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the Atlantic Center for the Arts, and the Friday Harbor Labs Whiteley Center.  

Laura composes for traditional instruments of the orchestra; with sounds from nature &  electronics, and in collaboration with  artists across genres.
